Woman arrested after crashing stolen vehicle in Dunnellon

A 24-year-old Citrus Springs woman was arrested after crashing a stolen vehicle in Dunnellon.

On Tuesday, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of SW 110th Street and SW 110th Avenue in Dunnellon.

The deputy arrived on scene and met the vehicle’s sole occupant, Naya Marie Melendez.

A computer check on the vehicle, a 2020 Hyundai Elantra, revealed that it had been reported stolen out of Citrus County.

The deputy called the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and was advised that a male victim reported the vehicle stolen earlier that day at around 5:30 a.m.

According to the victim, Melendez had been “acting out and stealing from the household” and took the vehicle without permission. The victim also mentioned that Melendez does not have a valid driver’s license.

The victim told the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office that Melendez pried open his locked bedroom door, took the spare keys, and left in the vehicle.

Melendez spoke with the MCSO deputy and admitted that she was learning how to drive and did not have a driver’s license. She added that she got into an argument with the victim earlier in the morning, asked for the keys, and left because she was afraid of the victim.

Melendez was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail where she is currently being held on $2,000 bond.

She faces a felony charge for grand theft of a motor vehicle. A court date has been scheduled on December 28 at 9 a.m., according to jail records.
