Ocala man allegedly swallows cocaine during traffic stop

A 37-year-old Ocala man was arrested after cocaine was found inside his vehicle during a traffic stop.

On Wednesday, November 17, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a white Mercedes traveling west on the 1600 block of SW Highway 484 in Summerfield.

MCSO units were on the lookout for a vehicle matching the description in connection to a criminal mischief case.

The vehicle stopped at a gas station and the deputy observed the driver, Kelvin Leon Vereen, exit the vehicle, pump gas, climb back inside, and drive out of the parking lot.

The deputy activated the patrol car’s emergency lights and siren and attempted a traffic stop. The MCSO report indicated that Vereen continued west toward SW 20th Avenue Road, turned south, and then pulled into a Burger King parking lot.

A computer search on Vereen’s driver’s license revealed that it was suspended.

After pulling into the parking lot and restraining Vereen outside of the vehicle, the deputy observed clear baggies on the driver-side floorboard.

A clear baggie with 4 grams of a leafy substance that field tested positive for THC was found, along with a small mason jar with a white rock-like substance that field tested positive for cocaine.

The deputy observed a white substance, which also tested positive for cocaine, sprinkled on the floorboard. Numerous empty baggies were also found next to a black scale.

Due to the white substance scattered along the floorboard, the deputy asked if Vereen had swallowed any drugs, and he denied it.

Vereen was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail, and he began to throw up at the jail. A white substance was found in his vomit, and that substance tested positive for cocaine.

Vereen is facing felony charges for cocaine possession, destroying evidence, and driving with a suspended license.

He was released on bond and a court date has not been scheduled yet, according to jail records.
