County firefighters offering tips to avoid Christmas tree-related fires

With Christmas right around the corner, the county’s firefighters are offering tips to help prevent tree-related fires.

According to Marion County Fire Rescue, nearly one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems. While these types of fires are rare, they can be more serious.

To help minimize any fire risk, MCFR recommends picking a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Before placing the tree into a stand, cut two-inches from the base of the trunk.

Make sure the tree is placed at least three feet away from any heat source such as a fireplace, radiator, candle, heat vent, or lights. According to MCFR, more than 20% of Christmas tree fires are caused by a heat source being placed too close to the tree.

The Christmas tree should not block any exits, and water should be added to the tree stand on a daily basis.

Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Certain lights are only intended for indoor or outdoor use.

Any string of lights with worn or broken cords, or loose bulb connections, should be replaced. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree and always turn off the tree when leaving the home or going to bed.

After Christmas, the tree should be properly disposed. Dried-out trees pose a fire risk and should not be left in the home or garage, and should not be placed outside against the home.

Residents looking to dispose of a tree can check with their local community to find a proper recycling center.

The Ocala National Forest is currently allowing visitors with proper permit to cut down sand pine Christmas trees in designated areas for a $10 fee per tree.
