Marion County offers disposal, recycling tips for holiday waste

Now that the Christmas holiday has passed, Marion County is offering tips for residents on how to properly dispose of their holiday-related waste.

According to the county, the following items can be placed in the household garbage:

  • Non-rechargeable household batteries (AA, AAA, C, and D).
  • Christmas ribbons and bows.
  • Styrofoam and packing peanuts.

These items are recommended for disposal at a recycling center:

  • Cardboard can be placed in the single-stream recycling containers at any recycling center.
  • Christmas lights can be placed in the metal bin at any recycling center or into the electronics box at the following locations: Baseline, Dunnellon, Forest Corners, Fort McCoy, Martel, Newton, and Weirsdale.
  • Christmas trees, with the decorations removed, can be placed in the yard waste area at any recycling center.
  • Christmas cards and wrapping paper can be placed in the single-stream recycling containers at any recycling center.
  • Rechargeable batteries can be placed in the hazardous waste shed at any recycling center.

Electronic devices can be placed into the electronics box at the following locations: Baseline, Dunnellon, Forest Corners, Fort McCoy, Martel, Newton, and Weirsdale.

Any plastic shopping bags can be recycled at participating department and grocery stores.

Marion County recycling centers are open to residents of unincorporated Marion County. Electronics recycling events are open to residents of unincorporated Marion County and the City of Ocala.

Residents who live outside of the county or within other municipalities can take advantage of these opportunities through the purchase of an annual recycling center permit.
