MCSO offering free self-defense training program for women

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office wants to give local women the tools necessary to properly defend themselves.

In January, MCSO is hosting a Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) Program at its office located at 3260 SE 80th Street in Ocala.

The program is for women and teaches realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. The comprehensive course begins with a focus on awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance, and progresses into the basics of hands-on defense training.

The free 12-hour course is taught in four 3-hour sessions which are held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Session one: Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
  • Session two: Thursday, January 20, 2022.
  • Session three: Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
  • Session four: Thursday, January 27, 2022.

The course provides a safe environment for women to learn how to protect themselves against threats in numerous situations and attendance is confidential.

According to MCSO, the course is suitable for ages 13 and up, and comfortable/workout clothing is recommended.

To register, call Lieutenant Bazemore at 352-438-5953 or Sue VanWeelden at 352-816-9439.
