Sinkhole causes 650,000-gallon spill at Ocala Wetland Recharge Park

The Ocala Wetland Recharge Park reported a 650,000-gallon spill of public access reuse water due to a sinkhole in one of its cells.

According to a press release from the City of Ocala Water Resources Department, the spill occurred today at the Ocala Wetland Recharge Park, which is located at 2205 NW 21st Street, after a sinkhole formed in Wetland Cell 3.

The department says the water involved in the spill from the cell, which is slated for repair, has been “treated and presents no danger to the public or surrounding area.”

“Subsurface subsidences are an anticipated component of the park due to the karst topography below ground. They present no danger to the public or the environment,” reads the city’s press release.

In June and July of 2019, sinkholes in the same cell resulted in millions of gallons of public access reuse water spilled.

Three similar 1.5 million-gallon spills were also reported by the park in the same cell last year: in March, October, and again in December. In all three incidents, the city cited that the cell was “slated for repair.”
