Marion County firefighters rescue dog from burning home in Belleview

Marion County firefighters rescued a dog from a burning home in Belleview on Thursday.

At 7:56 p.m., Marion County Fire Rescue units were dispatched to the 11000 block of SE 61st Avenue due to reports of a structure fire.

The 911 caller had reported that a house across the street was on fire with heavy smoke and flames.

Battalion Chief #3 arrived on scene at 8 p.m., and Belleview Engine Company #18 and Spruce Creek Truck Company #1 arrived on scene moments later.

The firefighters deployed attack lines and immediately began to attack the fire. A crew was also sent onto the roof for vertical ventilation operations.

According to MCFR, the construction of the house made it difficult for the firefighters to “chase” the fire.

Firefighter paramedics were sent into the house to complete a primary and secondary search, and the crews found a dog named Cuya inside.

Cuya was brought out of the house and a donated pet oxygen mask was used to administer life-saving oxygen. After receiving the oxygen, Cuya was reported to be in good condition.

Firefighters were able to combat the flames as the interior smoke conditions started to clear, and the fire was under control at 8:52 p.m.

The cause and origin of the fire is currently under investigation.

A family of six was displaced by the fire and the American Red Cross was called in to offer them assistance.
