SunTran looking to begin bus stop improvement project

SunTran is looking to kick off an improvement project for its 300-plus bus stops that are located both within and outside of the City of Ocala city limits.

A task work order between the city and Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. will be presented to council members during the Ocala City Council regular meeting on Tuesday, February 1.

The proposed task work order includes the design and construction plans and permitting for ADA compliant boarding and alighting areas as well as accessible paths, and the installation of passenger amenities such as benches, shelters, trash cans, bike racks, and lighting.

Bus stop improvements and site-specific amenities would require a review of existing activity from bus riders and field conditions. The project would also include construction plans and securing permits for 25 additional bus stops.

City staff is recommending approval of the task work order. If the city council members agree with that recommendation during their upcoming regular meeting, then the total cost of the task work order ($218,070) would be funded by a Public Transportation Grant Agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

This agreement was amended and approved by city council members during their previous meeting on Tuesday, January 18, and the FDOT would fully provide all funding for the project. The City of Ocala would not be required to provide a local match.

The Ocala City Council meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month at Ocala City Hall, which is located at 110 SE Watula Avenue.
