One person was killed after a fire ignited inside a second-floor apartment on E Fort King Street on Thursday.
At around 9:30 p.m., Ocala Fire Rescue units (Engines 1, 3, and 7, Rescue 3, Tower 1, Battalion Chief 22, and a Safety Officer) responded to a structure fire at the Oaks Apartments located at 1324 E Fort King Street.
Upon arrival at the two-story apartment complex, the units did not find any exterior signs of a fire. Engine 3 contacted the person who had reported the fire, and crews were advised that smoke had been seen coming from the roof of a second-floor apartment.
Engine 3 and Rescue 3 located the apartment, forced open the door, and the interior was filled with heavy black smoke.
As crews searched the apartment, they made their way to the primary bedroom and located the fire along with a deceased victim.
The fire was contained to the bedroom, and it was extinguished by 9:43 p.m.
The Florida State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
Marion County Fire Rescue, the Ocala Police Department, Ocala Electric Utility, and Ocala’s Building Department also responded.
