Hawthorne woman killed in crash on U.S. Highway 301 in Alachua County

A 24-year-old Hawthorne woman was killed in a crash that occurred on U.S. Highway 301 on Saturday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report, a 2009 Chevrolet HHR was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 301 at around 9:20 a.m. when the driver, a 27-year-old Hawthorne man, lost control of the SUV.

The SUV crossed the grassy median and entered the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 301. A 1996 F-Series Ford truck pulling a trailer was traveling northbound when the SUV crossed in front of the truck, and both vehicles collided.

The SUV’s driver was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in serious condition. The vehicle’s passenger, a 24-year-old woman from Hawthorne, was also transported to the same hospital in critical condition, and she was pronounced deceased at 2:46 p.m.

The northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 301 were closed for several hours while a crash investigation was conducted.

The FHP report did not provide any details regarding the occupants of the truck or their condition.

The names of the individuals involved in the accident were not released, per FHP policy.
