Bicyclist killed in hit and run crash on State Road 24 in Alachua County

A bicyclist was killed in a hit and run crash that occurred on State Road 24 in Alachua County early on Monday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report, an unidentified vehicle was traveling eastbound on State Road 24, around one mile west of NE 127th Street, sometime after midnight. A 28-year-old man from Starke was riding a motorized Schwinn bicycle on the paved shoulder of State Road 24.

For unknown reasons, the unidentified vehicle traveled partially onto the shoulder and the right side of the vehicle struck the rear of the bicycle. The rider was ejected from the bicycle and he was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The unidentified vehicle fled the scene in an unknown direction. According to FHP, the vehicle is believed to be a 2000 to 2004 Ford Excursion SUV or a 1998 to 2004 Ford F-250 or F-350 truck. The vehicle should have significant damage to the passenger’s side headlight assembly. The color of the vehicle is unknown.

Investigators believe that the crash occurred between 12 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Monday. If anyone has any information regarding the vehicle or driver that was involved in the fatal hit and run crash, please contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 1-800-387-1290.

The name of the bicyclist was not released by FHP.
