Ocala Electric Utility offers tips to save on electric costs this summer

As the summer temperatures continue to rise, Ocala Electric Utility is offering a few simple tips to help homes stay cool while lowering electric costs.

During the summer months, OEU encourages local residents to do the following:

  • Keep thermostats set at 78 degrees or higher when at home. Every degree below 78 degrees will raise the cooling costs by approximately six to eight percent per degree.
  • Keep thermostats set at a minimum of 83 degrees or higher when away from home for more than four hours.
  • Change air conditioner filters monthly.
  • Reduce water heater temperature settings.
  • Keep blinds or drapes closed during the day to reduce heating from the sun.
  • Adjust ceiling fans to turn counterclockwise during the summer months.
  • Be sure to turn off or unplug any unnecessary lights and electronic devices.

“We also encourage customers to explore our Community Solar Program. OEU is part of the Florida Municipal Solar Project, a large-scale community solar energy project that provides our customers the opportunity to purchase solar energy,” said Doug Peebles, Ocala Electric Utility Director.

Peebles continued by stating, “This program is available to all OEU customers, with no long-term contracts and no obligation for equipment installation or maintenance. We are proud to provide our community with an alternative energy source. These features will have long-term benefits to both our customers and our environment.”
