Convicted felon arrested after MCSO deputy finds handgun inside pickup truck

A 41-year-old convicted felon and sole occupant of a pickup truck was arrested after a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a handgun on the passenger seat.

On Tuesday, the MCSO deputy responded to the 4000 block of W Highway 326 in Ocala in reference to assisting with a search for a green 2022 Toyota Tundra. According to the MCSO report, the vehicle was believed to be operated by a man who was being sought for a felony warrant out of Alachua County.

The deputy found the pickup truck at the Pilot Travel Center located at 4032 W Highway 326, and the vehicle’s sole occupant was identified as Megan N. Steele.

The deputy immediately detained Steele and the vehicle was searched for any additional occupants. While outside of the truck, the deputy spotted a small handgun on the front passenger seat.

The handgun was later identified as a Beretta 92FS, and it was loaded with six 9mm rounds.

Steele made several spontaneous comments to the deputy that indicated she was aware of the firearm that was found inside the truck. After the deputy read Steele her Miranda warning, she agreed to discuss the incident.

Steele denied ownership of the handgun and stated that it belonged to her ex-boyfriend. The MCSO report indicated that Steele’s ex-boyfriend was the man that MCSO was searching for in connection with the felony warrant.

During the interview with the deputy, Steele stated that she located the handgun after drilling into the vehicle’s console safe. She admitted that she had previous felony convictions, and she confirmed that the deputy had observed the handgun on the passenger seat.

Steele stated that she was unsure if the handgun was loaded, and she had made sure to keep the firearm on “safe.”

A criminal history search of Steele confirmed that she had prior felony convictions from Bradford County. Steele was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail where she is currently being held on $10,000 bond. She is facing a felony charge for possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

A court date has been scheduled on Tuesday, August 2 at 9 a.m., according to jail records.
