Ocala man jailed after being accused of battering female victim during argument over cellphone message

A 25-year-old Ocala man was arrested after a female victim accused him of battering her during an argument over a cellphone message.

On Thursday, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office corporal had a phone conversation with a man, who was later identified as Dyrell Jatwan Mitchell, in reference to a domestic disturbance that occurred at his residence.

Mitchell stated that earlier in the morning, the female victim had “gone through” his cellphone, and this led to a verbal altercation while they were both at the residence. While they were arguing, he stated that the victim grabbed a cup of juice and threw it at him.

Mitchell advised that the victim packed up her belongings since she did not reside at the residence, and she placed the items in her vehicle and re-entered the home. He then alleged that the victim punched him and placed him in a chokehold.

According to Mitchell, he only placed his hands on the victim when he removed her arm from around his neck. The corporal noted in the MCSO report that Mitchell did not appear to have any injuries from the altercation.

An MCSO deputy responded to the victim’s residence and made contact with her. The deputy observed that the victim was “highly emotional.”

The victim told the deputy that earlier in the morning, she was in the bathroom with Mitchell when his cellphone received a notification. She stated that this prompted an argument with Mitchell.

The victim stated that a child began crying in a nearby room. When the victim attempted to leave the bathroom, she stated that Mitchell blocked the doorway with his body. She advised that she attempted to walk past him, and he allegedly placed his hand over her face and shoved her backwards.

According to the victim, Mitchell balled up his fist and swung at her, though the punch did not strike her. She told the deputy that she threw Mitchell’s cellphone out of the bathroom, and she was able to leave the bathroom when he went to retrieve it.

While the victim was tending to the child, she stated that Mitchell began throwing some of her personal belongings out of the residence. She advised that she exited the residence to gather those items, and Mitchell locked her outside of the home.

When the victim began to head to a neighbor’s house to ask for help, she stated that Mitchell opened the front door and ran after her. She advised that she was able to re-enter Mitchell’s residence.

The victim told the deputy that she knelt on the floor to grab her belongings, and Mitchell allegedly grabbed her waist from behind, lifted her up, and threw her onto the floor. According to the victim, Mitchell then proceeded to lift her up by her neck, threw her onto the couch, and then told her to “get out.”

The corporal noted in the report that the victim claimed to have been unable to breathe or speak while Mitchell was allegedly grabbing her neck. The MCSO report indicated that the victim’s left ankle appeared to be swollen, a red mark was on the right side of her neck, and her left eye was red and swollen from where Mitchell allegedly shoved her face while she was trying to leave the bathroom.

Mitchell was located at his place of employment. He was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail where he is currently being held on $5,000 bond. He is facing felony charges for domestic battery by strangulation and false imprisonment of an adult.

A court date has been scheduled on Tuesday, August 30 at 9 a.m., according to jail records.
