On Friday, August 26, Ocala Electric Utility will join the state to celebrate Florida Lineworker Appreciation Day to honor the individuals who risk their lives each day to ensure reliable delivery of electricity throughout Florida.
OEU has 117 employees who serve approximately 54,000 customers in the Ocala Electric Utility service territory. On Thursday, August 25, OEU will honor its employees with an appreciation breakfast.
In 2012, the Florida House of Representatives voted to designate August 26 as the annual “Lineworker Appreciation Day” to honor the thousands of men and women who risk their lives every day. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has consistently listed utility line work as one of the most dangerous jobs in the country.
Doug Peebles, Ocala Electric Utility Director, stated, “OEU employees are dedicated to providing safe, reliable service to our community. We take pride in our work, and I am honored to set aside this time to recognize and show appreciation for our employees’ impact on our community.”
Those who serve as lineworkers not only aid their communities, but others across the state and country as well. When disasters strike, lineworkers leave their families and homes to travel to neighboring cities and states – and even abroad – while working long hours under dangerous conditions to help restore power.
The City of Ocala encourages the community to recognize Florida lineworkers on this day of appreciation by using the following social media hashtags: #ThankALineman, #LineworkerAppreciationDay, and #LineLife.
