The Humane Society of Marion County (HSMC) is inviting children between the ages of 5 and 13 to come read to a shelter dog on select Saturday mornings at 11 a.m.
The Doggone Good Reading Program will return with its first event on Saturday, October 8, from 11 a.m. to noon. Additional reading events are planned on November 5 and December 3, and HSMC states that new dates will be added soon.
There is a maximum of 12 children per session, and all participating children must register in advance. A staff member from HSMC will call to confirm participation the week before the selected date.
A parent or guardian must accompany the child and stay at the shelter (in a separate area) while the child is reading. Children do better when they are reading to a non-judgmental dog with no outside criticism, according to HSMC.
The Humane Society of Marion County is located at 701 NW 14th Road in Ocala.
