Ocala resident voices concerns on rising utility costs, extra charges

To the Editor:

I read a letter written by a 65-year-old gentleman who moved here 25 years ago from Colorado addressing the surcharge that Ocala Electric Utility charges “pay as you go” customers.

My wife and I moved here in June of 2020 and utilize the prepaid power option. I have wondered since then why there is this extra charge to pay them money. It doesn’t matter if you pay online or go to the kiosk at the office – there is no way to not pay this fee.

They have already doubled the kilowatt per hour charge from $0.028 to $0.056. We previously used $4 to $6 per day, depending on whether we did laundry or not. Now it’s $8 to $12 per day.

Our power bills have doubled since July 1 and they still charge a “convenience fee” to just give them money. Call me crazy, but that’s not very convenient. Why, if we go down to pay our power bill in person with cash, do we have to pay this charge? Nobody can explain it.

Rant over. Have a nice day.
