Elderly pedestrian dies after being struck by sedan on SE Maricamp Road

An elderly pedestrian was killed in Ocala on Thursday evening after he was struck by a vehicle on SE Maricamp Road.

On Thursday, October 27, shortly before 6:10 p.m., a 19-year-old woman from Ocala was traveling eastbound in a sedan on SE Maricamp Road, just east of Water Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) incident report.

As the sedan was traveling in the outside lane, an 80-year-old man from Ocala was walking with a bicycle along the eastbound shoulder of SE Maricamp Road.

The FHP report stated that the elderly pedestrian began walking northbound onto SE Maricamp Road when the front corner of the sedan collided with his left side and the bicycle.

After the impact, the sedan continued eastbound before pulling over onto the shoulder. The pedestrian was found on the roadway in the outside travel lane.

The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. The driver and sole occupant of the sedan did not report any injuries.

The names of the driver and pedestrian were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles recognizes the month of October as National Pedestrian Safety Month in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This awareness campaign aims to increase awareness around pedestrian safety while reminding drivers to watch for pedestrians each time they are behind the wheel.
