One dead, two others seriously injured in head-on collision on State Road 40

One person was killed, and two others sustained serious injuries, in a head-on collision that occurred on State Road 40 in Marion County on Friday afternoon.

Shortly after 3:05 p.m., a 29-year-old woman from Deltona was traveling westbound on State Road 40, near NE 125th Terrace Road, in a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. According to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report, the vehicle was in the westbound lane in a “tight grouping” with other traffic.

At the same time, a 2022 Hyundai Kona was heading eastbound on State Road 40. The FHP report stated that the vehicle’s two occupants were a 74-year-old man (driver) and 70-year-old woman (passenger), both from Port Orange.

As the Hyundai Kona approached the Hyundai Elantra’s location, another vehicle traveling westbound on State Road 40 stopped in the lane and waited to turn left into a private drive, according to the FHP report.

All other traffic behind the Hyundai Elantra came to a stop or avoided a collision by traveling onto the north grass shoulder. The FHP report stated that the Hyundai Elantra approached the stopped vehicles quickly and veered to the left to avoid a collision.

The Hyundai Elantra proceeded to travel into the eastbound lane of State Road 40 and directly into the Hyundai Kona’s path, which resulted in a head-on collision.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital in serious condition. The Hyundai Kona’s passenger sustained fatal injuries and passed away at the hospital.

The names of the individuals involved in the accident were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
