The Ocala Police Department is investigating a crash that killed a 67-year-old male bicyclist on Saturday night.
Witnesses told investigators that shortly before 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, the bicyclist was lying down next to his bike in the southbound lane of NW 27th Avenue, near the 1400 block.
According to the witnesses, two vehicles traveling in the same lane on NW 27th Avenue approached the bicyclist who was stationary on the roadway. The first vehicle was able to swerve to the left to avoid impact, but the driver of the second vehicle was unable to react in time and struck the bicyclist.
OPD stated that the crash occurred just north of Rural King and the roadway was dimly lit at the time of the accident.
The bicyclist was trauma alerted to a local hospital where he sadly passed away due to his injuries. His next of kin has been notified.
According to OPD, there have been 16 traffic-related fatalities in Ocala this year.
