Ingeborg Szabo, 80, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Thomaston, Conn., passed away on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, after a brief illness. Born in Steyr, Austria, on September 28, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Johann and Katharina (Resch) Neuhauser.

It was in Steyr where she met her husband, Istvan (Steve) Szabo. They wed on Feb. 7, 1959, and immigrated to the United States on July 16, 1959, to pursue the American dream, taking up residence in Thomaston, Conn. Driven by her strong ambition to succeed, working days and going to night school, she became an LPN in 1965. She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital for several years. Inge was very talented when it came to sewing and looked to turn her hobby into a new career. She signed on for a job with Dibner Bros. of Waterbury as a seamstress. She quickly became lead seamstress, working on wedding dresses and evening gowns for the New York City garment district distributors. Years later, Inge began working for Imbimbo’s Formal Wear of Waterbury. Eventually, she opened her own sewing business consisting of repairs and alterations for various area dry cleaners and creating custom clothing for private customers. After retiring in 1999 along with her husband, they relocated to Ocala, Fla.

Apart from sewing, Inge had many hobbies such as bowling, knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching. A generous person, she enjoyed making sweaters, blankets, tablecloths and framed cross-stitching for family and friends. She also enjoyed going to soccer games to cheer on three generations of participating family members. While in Ocala, she took up horseshoes and golf.

Inge was devoted to her family and made it a point to recognize special occasions and achievements and attend whenever possible. She will be missed by all that knew her. Left to cherish her memory besides her husband, Steve, of 63 years is her son, Thomas Szabo and his wife Mary, of Wolcott, daughter, Lisa Szabo of Thomaston; grandchildren, Lauren Szabo of Naugatuck, Kevin Keiper of Thomaston, Kimberly Szabo of Levittown, Pa., and Randi Szabo of Thomaston. She is also survived by her brother, Alfred Neuhauser of San Diego, Calif., and a sister, Hilde Grillmayr of Molln, Austria.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the E.W. & Lucille Cates House of Ocala, Fla., for the care and comfort they provided to her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov.19, at 11 AM at St. Peter’s-Trinity Church, 160 Main St., Thomaston. Interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Inge’s memory to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org) or any cancer organization of your choice.
