OPD employees donate 50 Thanksgiving meals to local families in need

Ocala Police Department employees donated their holiday bonus checks on Tuesday to provide 50 Thanksgiving dinners to local families in need.

Each year, the City of Ocala gives OPD employees a $30 check to help cover the cost of their Thanksgiving meal. This year, as well as in previous years, OPD employees opted instead to donate their money so that other families could enjoy a nice holiday meal.

OPD staff purchased and packaged the meals together. The 50 families received a complete Thanksgiving meal that included a turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, rice, rolls, cranberry sauce, and a choice of sweet potato or pumpkin pie for dessert.

School Resource Officers and other community partners helped OPD identify the families that were in need of a meal, and OPD’s employees hand-delivered the meals to their homes.

In addition, OPD donated three turkeys to the Kings Embassy church for their free community Thanksgiving dinner.

All remaining funds from the Thanksgiving bonus checks will be used by OPD to stuff Christmas stockings with goodies for the officers to hand out to children during the holiday season.
