Adult, child from Ocala killed in crash after vehicle overturns on Florida Turnpike in Sumter County

An adult and child from Ocala were killed on Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash that occurred on the Florida Turnpike in Sumter County.

On Thursday, shortly before 1 a.m., a sedan and SUV were both traveling northbound on the Florida Turnpike. According to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report, the sedan attempted to pass the SUV near milepost 304, and the sedan proceeded to collide with the rear of the SUV.

After the collision, the sedan came to a final rest on the grass shoulder of the highway. The sedan’s driver and sole occupant, a 27-year-old man from Inverness, was not injured in the accident.

The SUV traveled onto the grass median and overturned multiple times, which ejected one of the vehicle’s passengers. FHP stated that the SUV had seven occupants, all from Ocala: a 38-year-old woman (driver), 40-year-old man, 37-year-old woman, and four children ranging in age from 10 to 14.

Two of the SUV’s passengers, the 40-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy, sustained fatal injures in the crash and were pronounced deceased at the scene. All other occupants of the SUV sustained minor injuries.

The names of the individuals involved in the accident were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
