Elderly woman, dog killed after being struck by minivan in Gainesville

An elderly woman and her dog were killed on Thursday evening after they were struck by a minivan on NW 53rd Avenue in Gainesville.

Shortly before 7:40 p.m., the minivan was traveling westbound near the 1200 block of NW 53rd Avenue. At the same time, the elderly woman was walking her dog in the area and attempted to cross the street, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

The woman and her dog proceeded to walk into the path of the minivan, which resulted in a collision. Both the pedestrian and her dog sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

Gainesville Fire Rescue, traffic homicide investigators, the GPD forensics unit, and a medical examiner responded to the scene. During an investigation into the crash, traffic was temporarily closed on NW 53rd Avenue in both directions.

According to Gainesville police, the minivan’s driver remained on scene and was not injured in the crash.

The pedestrian’s name was not released by the Gainesville Police Department.
