A 13-year-old boy was critically injured on Wednesday evening after his bicycle was struck by a vehicle in northwest Gainesville.
At approximately 7:35 p.m., Gainesville Police Department officers responded to the 4400 block of NW 13th Street in Gainesville in reference to a crash involving a vehicle and bicyclist.
Shortly before the accident, a 13-year-old boy was riding his bicycle on NW 44th Avenue. When he approached NW 13th Street, he proceeded to enter the roadway and collided with the front passenger side of the vehicle, according to GPD.
After the collision, the female driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and told officers that she was heading northbound on NW 13th Street in the outside lane when she saw the front wheel of the bicycle enter the roadway. She advised that she was unable to brake before striking the bicycle.
The 13-year-old boy was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital as a trauma alert for treatment of life threatening injuries.
In a social media post on Thursday evening, the Gainesville Police Department provided an update on the boy’s condition and stated that he is in critical but stable condition.
