Ocala Electric Utility warns residents of utility payment scams

Ocala Electric Utility is reminding residents to stay alert for potential utility payment scams.

In an effort to help residents stay protected from utility payment scams, the organization shared some tips through social media.

“Ocala Electric Utility will never call its customers demanding payment using any prepaid cards or debit cards” stated OEU in a social media post. The organization added that its employees will never call, email, or appear unannounced at a customer’s home to sell energy-saving products or information, or request financial information to seek refunds.

The post further explained that residents should be “suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason” or ask for “personal or financial information.”

Ocala Electric Utility also cautioned residents to “never wire money, provide debit or credit card information to someone you don’t know, or meet with a stranger in person to make a payment.”

Any residents who believe they have been scammed are encouraged to call the City of Ocala at 352-629-2489. In addition, residents can click here to report any suspected utility payment scams to the Federal Trade Commission.
