Resident discusses new property tax exemption for low income seniors in Marion County

To the Editor:

A new exemption went into effect this year and qualifying senior homeowners have until March 1st to get a reduction on their property tax bill for this year. Up to a $50,000 reduction on their home value.

Here are the qualifications: the homeowner must be at least 65 years old; must have lived in the home for 25-plus years; the home must be valued under $250,000; and income must be less than $32,500.

This exemption was created in 2012 (Amendment 11) to help keep low income seniors from losing their homes due to the inability to pay their property taxes. The Marion County Board of County Commissioners adopted it on January 4, 2022. It benefits the longstanding Marion County seniors who supported this county for so long and need a little help staying in their homes.

Please help me spread this important financial information to those in need of it. Thank you.
