In response to recent letters discussing a lack of grocery stores in Ocala/Marion County, two residents wrote in to voice their thoughts on this topic.
“It’s not only the west side that has problems. I wouldn’t say that we lack grocery stores, but we lack grocery stores where they are needed. For instance, Baseline Road (58th Street) could really use a grocery store. As far as I know, there are no grocery stores from State Road 40 to the very end of Baseline Road – all the way to southern Belleview. There are plenty of spots that would be appropriate for a grocery store. Even a Walmart Neighborhood Market would be a welcome addition for the people living along Baseline,” says Ocala resident Carolyn Beyer.
“Northwest of I-75, where I live, there is only one Publix at Blichton Road. You need to drive around 30 minutes to find another grocery chain. Publix’s prices are very expensive and not everyone can afford them. We need more groceries chains in this area to compete with Publix’s prices. At Blichton, next to Publix, a big space is available. Why is it not being leased? It could be a solution for this problem. I hope the elected officials help the residents,” says Robert Clarke, Ocala resident.
