Resident shares thoughts on high cost of living for seniors in Ocala/Marion County

To the Editor:

I have never written a letter to an editor before, but I have to add my comments regarding the high cost of living for seniors.

We moved to Ocala, downsizing to a 1,600 square-foot home. With homestead, our property taxes are $2,800. The new so-called senior homestead exemption is only for those living in their home for at least 25 years. How many of us qualify for that? Maybe a handful and their taxes are already low to begin with.

We have lived in other counties in Florida and they all had an added senior exemption. With all the building going on, Ocala/Marion County will have plenty of property tax revenue coming in to pay for increased expenses. They can afford to give us seniors the extra exemption we should have.
