Virginia Bradbury

Virginia Marie Lomba Bradbury
Virginia Bradbury

Virginia Marie (Horgan) Lomba Bradbury passed away peacefully on Monday, March 13th, 2023 at Kindred Hospital in Ocala following a brief illness. She was born in May 1943, in Lynn, Massachusetts, to John Henry and Veronica Olive (Sweeney) Horgan, the youngest of 8 children. Virginia, known to family and friends as “Ginny”, or simply “Gin”, attended Catholic school and graduated from Classical High School in Lynn in 1960. She worked for many years for the Massachusetts Department of Education in Boston, MA.

From a young age, Ginny was very kind, compassionate and generous, yet assertive, always ready to speak her mind (a necessity as the youngest of 8 children!). One of the earliest pictures of her shows her as a young girl holding a cat, displaying her love for animals, especially stray cats. She met her first love and husband, John Lomba on the phone due to a wrong number her mother had dialed and they proceeded to talk for hours. She and John married in August of 1961. Because of their shared love of animals, Gin and John had a large family of stray and unwanted animals in their home.

Her kindness and compassion extended to people as well. Ginny was always there to support those she cared for in any way possible. She always greeted new people with a warm smile and a twinkle in her eyes. She was an avid reader, a great cook, loved “girl” shopping, lively conversations, as well as playing cards and Scrabble. Ginny will be deeply missed by many people.

At a Christmas party in Lynn, Ginny met Peter Bradbury. They hit it off immediately and the rest was history. They both retired to Ocala, Florida in 1987, eventually tying the knot in Cotton Plant, Florida, in December 1993. Both Ginny and Peter were very active in their local church. Ginny’s many roles at the church included volunteering to help in the kitchen during vacation bible school for the children, counting offerings and taking attendance, and making care calls for people living alone. She also volunteered at the public library for many years.

Ginny is pre-deceased by her husband of 30 years, Peter Bradbury, her parents, John Henry and Veronica (Sweeney) Horgan, her 5 brothers John Jr, William, Richard, David, and Eugene Horgan, as well as her sisters Joan (Horgan) Mitchell and Mary (Horgan) Wallace. She is survived by her former husband John Lomba, as well as many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Visitation will be Friday, March 17, 2023 from 1-2 pm with the service immediately following at Saint John’s United Methodist Church, 12390 West Highway 328 Ocala, Florida. There will be a Fellowship celebrating Ginny’s life after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to local no kill animal shelters, SPCA of Ocala, https://spcaofocala.org/ or the Humane Society of Marion County, https://thehsmc.org.
