A group of student volunteers at North Marion High School cleaned up their campus on Friday in celebration of Earth Day.
During this past week, which featured a variety of environmental activities, nearly 50 students at North Marion High School (151 W Highway 329 in Citra) signed up for the first annual volunteer cleanup event hosted by the Ecology Club.
On Friday, those student volunteers helped the custodial staff by wiping down tables, vacuuming, picking up litter, and mopping all over the campus.
On a typical day, the custodial staff at North Marion High School stays on campus as late as 11:30 p.m. Thanks to the efforts of the students who took part in the cleanup event, the appreciative custodians were able to head home early.
The North Marion High School’s Ecology Club organized the event to help custodians while spreading awareness on the consequences of everyone’s actions in the community. The participating students view the cleanup event as a small step towards combating the larger issue of littering in Ocala/Marion County.
