Retired Marion teacher shares thoughts on classroom bans

To the Editor:

I am a retired high school teacher and administrator in Marion County. The comic strip Shrimp & Grits brought back the day I was having a conversation with my Science class about choices in beliefs. We were discussing both sides of the origin of man. I was called out by a parent saying that was wrong, and she removed her child from the class.

How can banning books and hiding information be right? How can preparing a child to make good decisions in the real world be wrong? How is banning materials about matters in society wrong? Our responsibility as parents and educators is to prepare the child to leave you and live correctly and safely out in the real world. There is no guarantee you will be here tomorrow to shield your child from reality.
