Marion School District seeks public input on new math, social studies textbooks

Marion County Public Schools is seeking feedback from the public on new Mathematics and Social Studies textbooks that are being adopted for the 2023-2024 school year.

According to MCPS, the new textbooks include Mathematics for Grade Seven Acceleration, Mathematics for College Algebra, Middle School Social Studies (grades 6 to 8), and High School Social Studies (grades 9 to 12).

Review committees consisting of teachers, parents, and community members recently viewed instructional materials and made recommendations to Superintendent Dr. Diane Gullett. An informational session was then held at the School Board Administrative Briefing and Work Session on Thursday, and the recommended titles were presented.

The window for public input is now open, and anyone interested in reviewing the textbooks and related materials can do so by visiting the Marion County Public Schools website.

Public comments can then be presented in person at the Marion County School Board meeting that will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11.

School Board members will then vote on the recommended materials at their meeting on Thursday, July 20. After the vote, a 30-day objection window will open to the public.

For more information, contact the Instructional Materials Department of Marion County Public Schools at 352-236-0525.
