Ocala police officers were involved in a shooting that left one man dead on Saturday morning.
A concerned mother contacted the Ocala Police Department at 8:53 a.m. to report that her son was making suicidal threats. She advised that her son was at the Home Depot located on State Road 200 in Ocala, according to OPD.
After the mother provided a description of her son’s physical appearance and the vehicle he was driving, OPD officers responded to Home Depot. Upon arrival, the officers spotted the man’s vehicle, and they approached it on foot.
OPD stated that officers spoke with the man in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, but he proceeded to fire a handgun. The officers responded by returning fire, and the man was fatally struck during the incident.
No officers were injured.
The officer-involved shooting incident is currently being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. No further details were provided.
