Readers voice support for a local ice rink

Several readers recently submitted letters to Ocala-News.com to voice their support for an ice rink in Ocala/Marion County.

“In response to the letter about an ice rink in Ocala, I would also like to show my support again for this project. Having grown up in Southern California, I knew nothing of winter sports. When I moved to New England, at the age of 11, I fell in love with the game of hockey. I played it till I was almost 50 years old, and I coached my sons sports teams for many years. In addition to ice hockey, there is also figure skating and recreational skating, tournaments, and many other ways for a rink to be self-sustaining. It would be great to have the youth here in the south be able to experience the winter sports associated with ice skating,” says Ocala resident Richard Bolinder.

“An ice rink would be a great idea. I played hockey all my life and coached it as well. We moved here to Ocala but nobody is interested in one of the world’s greatest sports. I would love to coach youth hockey again and also play in a men’s league. Since no ice rink exist, we are moving to South Florida where many ice rinks exist. Please consider an ice rink in Ocala as the youth can mostly use it,” says Jerry Poirier, Ocala resident.

“I have to agree with the suggestion that Ocala needs an ice rink. What a wonderful addition an ice arena would make to our city and Marion County. The children as well as the adults would have an opportunity to enjoy the sports of ice skating, figure skating, speed skating, and hockey. Let us not forget our speed skating Olympians – Erin Jackson, Brittany Bowe, and Joey Mantia – who serve as an inspiration and role model to the children of our community. Let’s do it!” says Ocala resident Rosemarie Ramagnano.
