Troopers identify, arrest suspected street racer after violent crash on SR 200

A 23-year-old Ocala man was arrested this week for his alleged involvement in a street race on State Road 200 that led to a crash with serious injuries.

Jacob Steven Michael Carmack was arrested on Tuesday and booked into Marion County Jail on the following charges: reckless driving which resulted in serious bodily injury to another (felony), failure to remain at the scene of a crash which resulted in serious bodily injury to another (felony), and racing on highways (misdemeanor).

As of 9 a.m. on Wednesday, a booking photo of Carmack was not yet available.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, two vehicles – a Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette – were traveling westbound on State Road 200 in the early morning hours on November 18.

FHP stated that both drivers were racing at a high rate of speed, and they made multiple lane changes in a “reckless manner.” When both vehicles were near the intersection of SW 80th Street, the Corvette struck a Toyota Prius that was also traveling westbound on State Road 200.

The Prius was occupied by a 78-year-old woman (driver) and 82-year-old man (passenger), both from Ocala. The FHP incident report did not specify if they sustained any injuries in the crash.

After the initial collision with the Prius, the Corvette veered off the roadway where it struck a utility pole and then a tree.

Shortly after the crash, FHP investigators released the following images of the Mustang’s driver to the public in hopes of identifying him:

According to FHP, the driver of the Mustang – later identified as Carmack following tips that were submitted by the public – parked his vehicle behind a local business before briefly checking on the status of the Corvette’s driver. He then fled from the scene.

Marion County Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of the crash, and the Corvette’s driver was rushed to a local hospital as a trauma alert.
