64-year-old Ocala man arrested on 21 counts of child porn

A 64-year-old Ocala man is behind bars after local authorities received a tip from a national agency that numerous files of child sexual abuse material were uploaded to his Google Drive account.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, a detective received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on September 19, 2023. The tip indicated that the user of a Google account had uploaded multiple files containing child pornography to Google Drive, an online cloud-based storage service.

MCSO stated that the detective utilized several investigative techniques, which identified Richard Campbell as the user of the Google account referenced in the tip.

After a search warrant was obtained, investigators responded to Campbell’s residence located in the 10800 block of SW 89th Court in Ocala on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Campbell was detained shortly after he exited the home.

After being read his Miranda rights, Campbell stated that he owns two laptop computers, and he is the sole user of both devices. He claimed that he purchased one of them from a pawn shop around 10 years ago in North Carolina, where he previously lived, according to the arrest report.

The report stated that Campbell told investigators that he “regularly had issues” with “inappropriate material” being on the laptop he had purchased from the pawn shop. He claimed that he had tried on numerous occasions to delete the files in question without success.

After initially denying that he viewed child sexual abuse material, Campbell admitted during the post-Miranda interview that he has sought out files depicting child pornography “for years” since it “reminds (him) of a nicer time in his life,” according to the arrest report.

During an examination of Campbell’s laptops, an MCSO Senior Digital Forensic Technician located numerous files depicting child pornography. In addition, the report stated that an iPad was found at the home, and the technician located “child erotic material” and web browsing history that indicated a previous user was “seeking out that type of material.”

Campbell was placed under arrest and transported to Marion County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond. He is being charged with 21 counts of possession of child pornography.

A court date has not been scheduled yet, according to jail records.
