A new animal shelter is urgently needed

To the Editor:

I am a 20-year resident here in Ocala. I have seen the enormous growth that has been happening. There is no infrastructure in place to accommodate this rapid growth. Our county commissioners are lacking in every aspect of how to accommodate this.

Our animals are suffering, as our shelter is from 1990. Our population has grown to 400K. Land was donated for building a new shelter and monies have been allocated (penny tax), yet here we are. Our county commissioners should be ashamed of themselves.

There are over 500 pets at Marion County Animal Services and the Humane Society of Marion County, and all rescues. Yet, our county commissioners hand out more breeding licenses and continue to allow more building. This is not the Horse Capital of the World any one of us should be proud of. I am hoping more like-minded people jump on the bandwagon and make these commissioners accountable!!!
