Katharine White
December 23, 1935 – February 22, 2024

Katharine Riber White, daughter of Earl and Marcella Riber was born December 23,1935, in Dayton, Ohio. She passed away peacefully on February 22, 2024, in Ocala, Florida surrounded by her family. Katie is survived by her husband of 58 years, David J. White, children Marcella White (Michael Beaulac), Michel White (Mauricio Antunes), Brian White (Beth Tourville), stepchildren Martin and Bernadette Cousins. She is also survived by her brother Rob Riber, sister Cora Ludwig, sister-in-law Linda White, brother-in-law Dennis Reese, and many nieces and nephews around the globe.

Katie grew up in Dayton, Ohio where she and her siblings loved spending summers on their family farm in Wilmington, Ohio. Katie attended the University of Miami Ohio where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She taught for several years in Colorado, Vietnam and Ohio. She then met and married her “Lovie” David White. They settled in Plattsburgh, New York where they raised their family. Katie taught for almost 30 years at the Saranac Central School, where she touched the lives of hundreds of children in the north country of New York.

Katie was very involved in her community, and did not hesitate to accept positions of leadership in many organizations including the Saranac Central School District, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, the Kent Delord House Museum, the Plattsburgh Duplicate Bridge Club and the Valcour Sailing Club. Katie’s legacy can still be felt in the communities she served.

Her biggest passion was playing Bridge. She was very competitive and proud of her Gold Life Master status. Katie enjoyed many outdoor activities. In the summers, you could often find her sailing and racing on Lake Champlain. She was also an avid horseback rider, where she taught her whole family how to ride and care for their horses on their farm in Valcour, New York. In the winters, Katie often enjoyed time on slopes skiing with her family at Beartown, Paleface, and Whiteface Mountains.

After retirement, Katie and David set out to explore North America by motorhome. They would spend up to six months a year on the road, visiting National and State Parks from one coast to the other. In their travels they visited 48 of the US states and most Canadian provinces. They were always keeping an eye open, and binoculars close, to add to their birding life list. During their travels they would visit family and friends near and far, as well as making many new friends. When their motorhome years were over Katie and Dave bought a home in Ocala, Florida. They enjoyed many happy times hosting family and friends at their home in On Top of the World Communities. Katie and Dave enjoyed cruises in the Caribbean and beyond, where they spent many holidays with family visiting exciting ports of call.
