Ocala man arrested on 8 counts of DUI manslaughter in SR 40 accident

The driver of a pickup truck that sideswiped a bus carrying over 50 farm workers on West State Road 40 on Tuesday morning has been arrested on eight counts of DUI manslaughter for the accident, which left 8 people dead, 8 people critically injured, and over 30 other individuals in need of medical attention.

Bryan Maclean Howard, 41, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon by Florida Highway Patrol state troopers assigned to the Northern Region Specialized Investigations and Reconstruction Team.

Howard is accused of eight counts of manslaughter while driving under the influence. According to a statement issued by FHP, the initial investigation revealed that the two vehicles made contact in a “sideswipe type collision.”

The bus, which was a 2010 International Bus, was transporting approximately 53 employees of a local farming company when it was sideswiped by Howard’s 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck.

The fatal accident took place on W State Road 40, a few hundred feet west of SW 148th Court, at around 6:35 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14.

After the collision, the bus traveled off the roadway, went through a fence, and overturned.

Throughout the day, authorities released additional details about the incident, including photos from the scene. Dozens of emergency units from the Marion County Fire Rescue, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Ocala Fire Rescue, and other agencies responded to the scene.

According to the FHP, the identities of the deceased will be “released pending next of kin notification.”

The accident caused W. SR 40 to be shut down from SW 180th Avenue Rd to SW 140th Avenue as investigators worked at the scene.

Many of the medical patients were taken from the scene in Marion County school buses.

On Tuesday, MCSO dispelled rumors that the school buses had been involved in the fatal accident.

“RUMOR CONTROL: This accident does NOT involve a Marion County Public Schools Bus,” read a statement from MCSO issued on Tuesday morning.

Maclean was transported to the Marion County Jail at 1:47 p.m. No additional court records are available in the case as of Tuesday evening.
