Man fleeing Ocala mental health facility shot, critically injured by police

A 23-year-old man whose family was transporting him to an Ocala mental health facility this afternoon is in critical condition after he fled and was shot by responding officers.

At around 12:20 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, the Ocala Police Department received a call for service regarding a man who was being taken to The Vines Hospital by family members.

Prior to the arrival of officers, OPD stated that the man began “acting erratic,” and he fled the area. Officers soon arrived on scene and conducted a search for the individual.

Shortly before 12:40 p.m., officers located the man near the 5500 block of SW 27th Avenue. When officers made contact with the man, he allegedly posed an “immediate threat,” which prompted officers to respond with “deadly force,” according to OPD.

The officers proceeded to shoot the man. After being struck by gunfire, the man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

As of Sunday afternoon, the man remains in critical condition. His name was not released by Ocala police.

In a social media post, OPD stated that no officers were harmed during this incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded to the site of the officer-involved shooting, and the incident is currently under investigation.
