A summer literacy program that provides local children a chance to hear stories about horses and then meet them is kicking off this week in downtown Ocala.

Reading with Horses returns to the Ocala Downtown Market, 403 SE Osceola Avenue, on Thursday, June 6, at 10 a.m. The program will continue every Thursday through July 25.

Each week, children’s books about different horses will be read alongside the horse that is the subject of the actual book.

Children will also be able to select a new book to take home each week during the event.

The event is hosted by Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses, an organization that takes tiny horses to thousands of adults and children each year to help comfort them.

In addition to the reading programs in downtown, the organization will host similar programs across libraries in Marion County.
