Ocala 7-Eleven employee accused of stealing hundreds of dollars over two months

An employee at a 7-Eleven in Ocala was arrested over the weekend after the business for which he works inadvertently discovered that he allegedly stole hundreds of dollars over a two-month period.

On Sunday, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the 7-Eleven located at 9445 SW 49th Avenue Road in Ocala in reference to multiple thefts that had occurred between the dates of April 13 and June 9, 2024, according to the arrest report.

A manager told the deputy that the business was investigating an unrelated case when an employee, Joel Alexander Oviedo, was observed on video surveillance footage placing money from a customer into his pocket, according to the report.

The deputy noted in the report that a total of $280 in cash had allegedly been taken by Oviedo. In addition, the manager further alleged that Oviedo had stolen another $538 from the business via fraudulent refunds.

The total reported loss for 7-Eleven was $818.

The deputy made contact with Oviedo. After being read his Miranda rights, Oviedo was shown the surveillance footage of the theft, and he confirmed that it was him on the video, according to the report.

During the post-Miranda interview, Oviedo claimed that a customer had handed him the money with the request to “break it.” Shortly after receiving the money, Oviedo stated that the customer “walked away.”

In addition, Oviedo further admitted to committing the fraudulent refunds because he was trying to “gain (points) on his 7-Eleven app,” according to the report.

Oviedo was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail, where he is currently being held on a $2,500 bond. He is being charged with grand theft over $300 but less than $5,000.

A court date has not been scheduled yet, according to jail records.
