Local firefighters now have access to new thermal imaging cameras to help them locate any victims who may be trapped inside a burning structure in Marion County.
On Tuesday, August 27, Marion County Fire Rescue announced that FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed) Thermal Imaging Cameras have been installed on each of its fire-based rescue vehicles.
First responders who work both EMS and fire-related calls will now have access to these cameras, according to MCFR.
In a social media post, MCFR stated that when its search and rescue crews respond to a structure fire, the new cameras will help them locate any victims inside of the structure. In addition to allowing firefighters to see through thick smoke, the cameras also allow them to spot flames inside walls, attics, or ceilings.
The cameras use a technology that was originally designed for military aircraft, and it was introduced to fire departments many years ago.
Marion County Fire Rescue shared its excitement about its latest acquisition on social media, stating that the FLIR Thermal Imaging Cameras will help its firefighters save lives and property in Marion County.
