One of the largest banks in the United States is working on opening its first branch in Ocala at the former Boston Market, which closed for business just over a year ago.

Fifth Third Bank is currently renovating the shuttered restaurant at 2650 SW College Road. A new sign on the parcel shows that the bank is “coming soon.”

Founded in 1858, there are over 1,000 Fifth Third Bank branches throughout the United States. Outside of Ohio, where the bank operates 247 branches, the state of Florida has the largest collection of branches with 177.

Despite its significant presence in the Sunshine State, Fifth Third Bank had not yet opened any branches locally.

Now, the new Fifth Third Bank in Ocala is one of several branches under construction in the tri-county area, with another nearing completion in The Villages.

The new bank takes over a parcel that sat vacant dating back to last year, when Boston Market announced a temporary closure before permanently closing weeks later.
