A local resident was recently recognized by Ocala police as a “citizen hero” after his actions helped an officer detain an uncooperative suspect.
According to the Ocala Police Department, Allen “Greg” Smith was driving on W Silver Springs boulevard on Tuesday, August 6, when he saw an officer attempting to arrest a “non-compliant” male suspect in a vacant lot near the roadway.
OPD stated that Smith immediately stopped his vehicle and volunteered to assist the officer with detaining the unruly suspect.
With Smith’s help, the officer was able to safely handcuff the suspect while “avoiding the need for any use of force.” According to police, Smith’s assistance “likely prevent(ed) injuries to the suspect and officer.”
No further details were provided by OPD regarding the male suspect’s identity or what led to his arrest.
In recognition of Smith’s actions on August 6, Ocala Police Chief Mike Balken invited him to OPD headquarters, where he received a Commendation and the agency’s Citizen Hero Award.
On Thursday, October 3, OPD stated in a social media post that its officers “proudly commend Mr. Smith for his support to the Ocala Police Department and our community!”
