Marion County school officials will look to approve a measure on Tuesday that will clear the way for the district to spend $2.9 million to replace roofs at Lake Weir High School, where several buildings have roofs that are over 22 years old.

The Marion County School Board will consider a measure to establish a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) of $2,939,652 for roof replacement at the facility on Tuesday, November 12, during its regular meeting.

According to school board records, the roofs on buildings 3, 4, 6, and 7 at the school are all past their “useful life expectancy” of 20 years. All of the roofs are over 22 years old and require replacement.

“Failure to perform replacement will negatively affect the energy efficiency and structural integrity of the buildings,” reads the school’s staff report.

The report goes on to additionally suggest that failure to replace the roofs will increase the “chance of humidity and moisture that may have a negative impact on air quality for students and staff members.”

The work will be managed by Foresight Construction Group, Inc. That company was originally approved as a continually contracted construction manager for Marion County Public Schools in November 2022. The drawings and specifications for the project were prepared by Rogers & Sark Consulting, Inc.

According to the staff report, the project should achieve “substantial completion” by August 8, 2025, and final completion “on or before September 8, 2025.”

Last month, the school district received over $140,000 in unspent money from two separate roof replacement projects at North Marion Middle School and North Marion High School.

The roof replacement at the high school, which is located at 151 W Hwy 329 in Citra, was originally estimated to cost $373,959. That job was completed for $328,232.04, or $45,726.96 less than the original estimate.

The Marion County School Board regularly meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at 1614 E Fort King Street in Ocala.
