A 65-year-old man was killed after losing control of his vehicle on Interstate 75 in Marion County on Friday night, crashing into a guardrail, and overturning into oncoming traffic.
The fatal accident took place at around 5:52 p.m. on Friday, November 29. According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was driving a pickup truck southbound on I-75, in the left lane, when he lost control and collided with the center median guardrail.
After the collision, the pickup truck overturned over the guardrail and struck a sedan that was traveling in the northbound lanes of the highway, near mile marker 365 in Marion County.
A sport utility vehicle that was traveling northbound in the left lane on I-75 was struck by debris from the ensuing accident.
According to FHP, the 65-year-old driver and his passengers, a 74-year-old Orlando man and a 57-year-old Orlando man, were all transported to a local hospital.
The driver was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Both passengers sustained serious injuries in the crash.
Three occupants in the sedan were also transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. Those individuals are all from Albany, Georgia.
While crews were attending to the scene on Friday night, northbound lanes of the highway were temporarily shut down and traffic was backed up for miles. The congestion followed similar reports throughout the day of heavy traffic on I-75 due to holiday travel.
