A motorcyclist was thrown from his vehicle and killed early Thursday morning after an 87-year-old Ocala woman turned into his path at an intersection in a local retirement community.

The fatal accident took place at the intersection of SW 80th Avenue and SW 80th Street in Ocala this morning at around 4:10 a.m.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the 37-year-old motorcyclist, who was from Citrus Springs, was traveling north on SW 80th Avenue, approaching the roadway’s intersection with SW 80th Street.

As the motorcyclist entered the intersection, a sedan being driven by the elderly woman southbound in the left turn lane on SW 80th Avenue proceeded into the intersection.

The sedan violated the motorcycle’s right-of-way, according to FHP, resulting in a collision that threw the motorcyclist and the motorcycle onto the northeast grass shoulder of the roadway.

The sedan came to rest obstructing the intersection. Both drivers were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment.

The motorcyclist was later pronounced deceased at HCA Hospital Ocala, according to FHP. The accident is still under investigation.

The intersection where the fatal accident occurred is located next to the Circle Square Cultural Center within the On Top of the World retirement community.
