A local parent’s petition calling on Ocala leaders to build a safe, accessible playground designed for children with special needs has already collected nearly 1,000 signatures.
The petition, which was launched on Change.org by Ceidrie Rodriguez, calls on the Ocala Parks and Recreation Department to prioritize the planning and development of a fully inclusive, ADA-accessible playground for the community.
In the petition, Rodriguez notes that while every child deserves a place to play, connect, and feel included, many children with special needs in Ocala do not currently have access to a safe space designed specifically for them.

Rodriguez states that traditional playgrounds often lack wheelchair-accessible equipment, sensory-friendly features, and safe, inclusive spaces for children of all abilities. Because of this, she believes many families are left feeling excluded.
To address these gaps, the proposed inclusive playground would provide ramps and adaptive swings for mobility access, as well as sensory play areas for children with autism and sensory sensitivities.
The petition also requests controlled access gates to ensure boundaries and secure layouts for children with developmental challenges, with a goal of creating a space where all children can play together, rather than separately.

While there are currently 41 parks and recreational facilities managed within the Ocala city limits, along with dozens of other facilities spread across Marion County, advocates believe a dedicated inclusive park is a necessary addition to the local landscape.
Rodriguez emphasizes that the initiative is about much more than just play, noting that it represents belonging, inclusion, and providing equal opportunities for every child in the area.
